Why do screen splines keep popping out?

A spline pops back out of the groove when the channel has worn too wide to grip a standard cord, or when the wrong-diameter spline was used to begin with. It is a frame problem showing up at the edge of a panel, not a sign the mesh itself is bad.

The groove, not the installer

Why the cord won’t stay seated

The spline’s job is simple: wedge the mesh into an extruded aluminum channel and hold it there under tension. That only works if the channel still grips. Every re-splining event widens the groove a little, and on Oviedo’s 1980s–90s frames — already on their second or third mesh — the groove is frequently the actual point of failure, not the panel that just popped.

Corroded corner screws compound it: a frame that has racked even slightly changes the geometry the spline is trying to hold, and a spline under uneven tension pops first at the corner.

The tell

If the same panel keeps popping in the same spot after a re-spline, that is a groove problem. Re-splining the same worn groove a fourth time buys weeks, not years.

When it means the whole cage, not one panel

Splines popping in more than one place

Groove wear tracks the frame’s age, not any one panel’s history. If splines are popping in two or three unrelated panels on the same cage, the honest read is that the whole channel system has aged out together — which is a full-cage rescreen conversation, not three separate repairs. The decision framework.

why do screen splines keep popping out

A spline pops back out when the frame’s groove has worn too wide to grip a standard-diameter cord, most often because the panel has been re-splined before and each pass widens the channel a little. Corroded corner screws make it worse by letting the frame rack out of square. If the same panel keeps failing in the same spot, the fix is a wider spline or a groove repair, not another identical re-spline. If it is happening in more than one panel on the same cage, that usually means the whole frame has aged out together.

Tell us the neighborhood, roughly how many panels are torn, and whether the cage is single or two storey. That is enough to give you a real number instead of a range.
